  • Damn Your Sparkling Wordplay!

It's 10:30pm and I'm still at work, where I've been for 14 1/2 hours now. Good times.

Mr. S and I were just arguing about a sentence in a letter. His talent for "wordsmithing" is unparalleled, at least in his own mind. I swear to you, he said a while ago, "I just read my first draft of this letter. God, I was marvelous." And seriously, he's about half a step above functional illiteracy, which makes it even more funny or sad or aggravating, depending on your point of view. Right now, 14 1/2 hours into this letter, it's a little more than aggravating.

Anyway, we were arguing over whether or not the verb in this sentence should be "is" or "was." He has a lot of trouble with these sticky grammar issues. As usual, we ended up arguing on the same side. He thought is should be "was," until at some point I convinced him, and then he yelled at me:

"It is, because it wasn't was."

    God, he's marvelous.
