  • Wouldn't it be lovely if I posted here everyday.  Do you ever go back and look over your old post? I did that yesterday... I discovered that half of them I couldn't read, because I had changed my font to white, but did not change my backgrounds.  I started trying to change some of those, but alas, the task proved to large for my patience.  I also did some yard work and played Scabulous.  Mostly, I accomplished nothing... so I am going to post today and then go do laundry, pay bills, grade papers and well, we will see about all that.  That is my plan.

Charlton Heston is dead.  I remember him as a much younger man, and then of course for his tirades in support of the NRA.  Well at least he was passionate about something.  He also worked with the homeless in Los Angeles, so he was probably a pretty nice guy.  In his last days, like Ronald Reagan he suffered from Alzheimers... that dreaded disease that robs you of all your memories and self identity.

    Charlton Heston

I have been interested in doing the Featured Grown Up post for this month, but I don't know... I have some thoughts rattling around in my brain.  Maybe tonight I will get them down.  Last night Skooter and I watched Atonement.  It was pretty good, you know how someone builds a movie up until you are expecting something great.  Well, I think that is what happened with this movie.  I was expecting more, anyway, I know I should have read the book first.  I noticed that Kite Runner is out on DVD, but Skooter hasn't read it, and I have already heard that they leave out a couple of major parts, so I will wait until he reads it.  Tonight we are going to watch No Country for Old Men.  There are so many new movies out, and so little time.

    Sailing to Byzantium

THAT is no country for old men. The young
In one another's arms, birds in the trees
    - Those dying generations - at their song,
    The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
    Monuments of unageing intellect.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
    Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God's holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
    Into the artifice of eternity.

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
    To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.
    ~ William Butler Yeats

    Until later...

  • LadyTerri

Hey miss you! :)  I read about Heston this morning it is so sad, I loved him in the planet of the apes..Last night I watched no country for old men and I thought the ending was aweful....but the rest of it was really good... :)

  • LadyTerri

I won't ruin the ending but I didn't like it at all...but it is worth watching I liked it :)

  • justagirl1969

Hey lady!  I really loved Heston's acting!!!  Thanks for the tribute to him!

  • pray14me

@LadyTerri - Thanks... I will watch it tonight... I will let you know what I think of the ending.

  • BB61

I just watched Major Dundee this week.    I was wondering how Heston was doing.     Think of the things he was able to do....

He dealt with apes from space
    ..parted the red sea...
..firgued out what Soylent Green was...
...fought in the Battle of Midway....
...was the last man on earth....

It was a well lived life he had.

  • pray14me

@BB61 - Yes, he lived a full life, I guess that is why I hate when someone like that dies with no memories of their full life, but such is the way of life... these are not things we can control.

Another actor from the "Golden Age of American Cinema" has gone.  Such a shame; I always loved his portrayal of Moses in "The Ten Commandments".

  • dingdongdingbat

I always used to think about The Ten Commandments whenever I thought  about Charlton Heston until he  became a spokesperson for the NRA.  That is not my favorite organization!

Every so often I go back and delete some of my old posts or make them private.  I run into the same problem with the backgrounds.

I see boats on the lake....I wonder if there are any out there now.

RYC...Tude does have some control at least until after Mother's Day!  I don't want annoy her too much before May 11th.

The work of a teacher never finishes, I guess. I prepared what the kids have to do in my absence, so I am on the safe side.
ryc: I am used to death right now, even starting to think that it follows me wherever I go. I never had a moment with my dad. He dropped mum at the hospital and never returned. Don't know whether something happened to him or whether he was killed, but my grandma used to curse me and blame me for her son's death. My granpa took care of me, and he was just like a father to me, but he, too, I watched whither away after a stroke and die a year later. I was there when they removed the life support machines and watched his chest stop heaving. I still get haunted by these images after 11 years of the actual incident happening. Mum was never in the picture, because she got married when I was 3 and lived with her husband. The only reason she's trying to get back in my life now is to get me married, thus get my responsibility off her shoulders, as if she ever had it. Anyway, I haven't heard from her for about 4 months, and I stopped caring. BonBon was the only thing that helped me survive all this. When I moved here, I was badly homesick and hated my present and the fact that I was stuck in Pakistan. He was a comfort to have here. After fighting with my cousin and having the whole family turn against me, he was there, but now? I am stuck in a house where I am not wanted, where I am treated as a maid and where I never open my mouth to talk to anyone, but now I am alone here. This is the main reason why I miss him. He was everything I had for myself here.

  • sweetanonymity

What a beautiful conclusion to your entry. I am attracted to that picture. Nice.

  • beadbrat

Oh! I hadn't heard about Heston! That is sad news... now will it touch off another little cluster of celebrity deaths?

The party went well. I will try to put some pictures up before I head to bed later...

  • DonnaLou

I read about Heston's death on Roadrunner Home page this AM. He used to be one of my favorite actors. I saw him in many of the films for which he's best known. I always remember the ending of El Cid. Great ending. Soylent Green was probably the most intriguing, but eerie, movie. Of course, Ben Hur (I had read the book when still in H.S.) and The Ten Commandments, I consider to be classic Heston roles. Also, discovered that his real name is Charles Carter. Charlton is from his mother's maiden name, and Heston from his step-father's surname.

Changing background and font colors: I have thought about doing, but then I figured out, it could mess up my previous posts, so I'm sticking with what I got, mostly. You may have noted I changed my font style. I didn't check back to see how that affected old posts.

    ~~Blessings, prayers 'n cheers

  • Mother_Moonie

I always liked his first name. It sounded nice.

The lake picture looks quite relaxing!!! Hugs!! Tracy

  • feedwaterclean

I had a big crush on Charleton when I was about nine; loved Ben Hur, the scene where he's a galley slave.   Thanks for the picture.

  • momofjenmatt

I have done that, when I am extreemly bored or want to repost ( look at old entries) sometimes the pictures I posted that I got off the web are gone ( which ruins the whole thing.) Ten Commandments, classic great movie.  Kite runner = such a good book I'm afraid to watch the movie.

  • pray14me

@momofjenmatt - Yeah, I sort of feel the same way about Kite Runner, I can't imagine that the movie would ever capture the essence of the book.

  • ElevenStones

The only good thing about Alzheimer’s is that you get to meet new people everyday.
Sorry just couldn't resist that one.
    Thanks for you kind comments.
I didn't buy many used DVDs this winter, usually pick up a dozen or so for the treadmill but spent more time snowshoeing this year.
Will have lots of 'new' movies next winter.

  • JustMeAndy

Heston will be missed--I remember him back to Ben Hur.  Great guy.  (His teeth will be missed!)

  • pray14me

    @JustMeAndy - Interesting observation...

  • FlashFosgitt

i have a lot of respect for anyone that dedicates the resources available to them to champion a cause for which they have a passion--even if i don't happen to agree with their opinions. he also made some pretty neat movies...

  • oh_mother_may_I

Yep I am glad they didnt get rid of cartoons.........

Sad about Heston He will be missed because

of his strength in the acting world.    I loved his acting.......

Hope you and skooter are doing very well.

  • BanefulCessations

Thanks for reading. There should be more, not new Flashisode and artwork, very soon
