| | A battle is going on. Every day. It is a war. The first continues day after day, night after night, hour-by-hour, minute-by-minute. This war is intense. Bullets fly, missiles sail through the air, bombs fall from the sky. The battlefield is, at times, full of holes with a heavy wind. The fighting is hard, both sides battling for a victory. This war is not overseas. This war is not imaginary. This war is right in us.
This war is the war of our mind. This is not a war with little soldiers running around in our mind. It is not a war with tiny lead bullets or explosives. It is not even a war of flesh and blood. It is a war of the spiritual realm. Ephesians 6:12 sums this war up by saying:
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (NKJV)
In this post, I have been referring to the battle of our mind as war and it is. But I especially like the word that is in this passage. Wrestle. That is exactly what it is. A wrestling match. On one side of the match, dressed in white, is the side of Truth. On the other side, dressed in a sickening black, is the rulers of darkness. The match begins; the wrestlers go back and forth, along the mat. At first it is unclear who is winning, the match is so fast and intense. Slowly, however, one overtakes the other. A closer look shows that the wrestler in white is victorious. Or maybe for some of us at times, it is the one in black. Which ever it is, a cause does exist as to why a certain side wins in certain situations.
I like the story of a Native American father and his son. The father told his son, "Inside of me there is a fight going on between two wolves. On one side is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control. On the other side is hate, lust, greed, thieving, immorality, and murder. They are fighting and only one can win." The boy looked at this father and said, "Which one will win?" The father replied, "The one I feed."
That is story is true to this situation. Christ, of course, is the most powerful and is over Satan and darkness. However, if a fight is going on inside of us about anything, hate, for example, the one we "feed" will win and we will hate. If we "feed” the "wolf" of Truth, however, then it will have the ability to come out on top in the battle of our mind. This is why we are told to focus on the things that are good and holy. When we focus on Jesus, the Word, and those things that are good. Then the wrestler in white will come out on top.
This week, in work, in play, and in church, let us focus on Christ, the Word, and the things that are good. Let us walk in the Spirit. Let us feed the "wolf" of the Truth. And let us give strength to the wrestler. |
