| | Stand back, I feel a rant coming on....
The idiocy of Hoosierville. This used to be a nice (albeit nowhere) place to live. Not-My-Man-Mitch is seeking to change all that. (For those of you who don't know, Mitch Daniels is our governor. His campaign slogan signs were all about "my man Mitch".)
First of all, he foisted his Daylight Savings Time plan upon us (for purely political reasons). Ignore the fact that we live in the middle of the US, where springing forward and leaping back becomes not only superfluous but ridiculous. We are forced to comply. So my county will now live year round in the Eastern Time Zone. To me, this means in summer, daylight will now come at 6 am instead of 5 am, and it will remain daylight until 10pm, instead of 9pm. Woe is any parent with children young enough to observe an early bedtime.
When we fall back, the opposite will happen. School children will not only be waiting for busses in the pitch black morning, they'll be lucky to get home before dark.
Obviously, Mitch rarely pulls his head out of his ass to see the daylight, much less take in any oxygen in order for his brain to function.
The other gripe with my state is on a local, county level. Our neighboring county to the west, St. Joseph, is in the process of passing a county-wide ban on smoking. I am in favor of non-smoker's rights. I am also in favor of smoker's rights. I feel it is a personal choice whether or not you choose to endanger your life by inhaling carcinogens. But this law is a little over the top, and I'll tell you why.
Were I the owner of one of the restaurants or other establishments where smoking will be banned, I would not appreciate the government telling me what I can or cannot do within my own establishment. People have the choice of not patronizing my business if they are offended by the fact that I allow smokers in there. Is the county paying my rent, my heat and light bill, my suppliers? No. Then why the hell should they be able to dictate whether or not smoking should be allowed? You don't like the smoke? Well, there are 476 other restaurants just down the street......take your happy ass to one of them.
It becomes a question of freedom, of choices, of rights, of all the things this country was founded upon. The things that one by one, the government seeks to snatch from our grasp and tell us it's for our own good.
Bah!
Happy blogging.
