TALES FROM UNDER THE BUS"But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell. I know, right now you can't tell. But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see A different side of me." ~Matchbox 20

Psycho-Social, Chemical, Biological, And Electro-Magnetic Manipulation of Human

After 35 years in the working world, I have come to the conclusion I know jackshit about getting ahead.

I was raised in an era that believed in work ethics.  An honest day's work for an honest day's pay.  Loyalty.  Trustworthiness.  Reliability.  High efficiency with low error rate.  And Other Bullshit.

Maybe those qualities are important in some remote third world country companies, but not in the company where I am employed.  Because I work in a world where loyal employees are worked nigh unto death and then shafted, and inept screwups are handed their whimsies on a silver platter.  With floral garnishes.

Because it isn't about what you know (or who you blow), how well you perform, or years of devotion and slavery.

It's about how well you manipulate, and how well you pull off manipulation without those being manipulated realizing that they are being manipulated.

Would that I were born with the manipulation gene instead of the ethical one, I too, might be in a position of power and success.  But I probably wouldn't sleep at night.

Happy blogging.

I blame the '80s for the acceleration of the death of the traditional work ethic, with its narcissistic population in mindless pursuit of "excellence" (at the cost of conscience) and gray cars and gray suits. That decade saw the transformation of old hippies into corporate sharks, baby boomers coming into power (with the corresponding corruption) and the further propagation of the notion that wealth equals "good". Women, especially, suffered a backlash during the '80s. We were told that we had more choices, but in actuality our choices were even more limited: we either did it all -- work and raise "excellent" children and keep "excellent" homes -- or we were nothing. Individual standards and morality gave way to a kind of hive mentality and the ability to keep up with fashion and trends became the yardstick by which our worth was measured.

Sorry, didn't mean to do a whole blog in your comments. But I see the '80s as the years when the Peter Principle became our Cultural Code and backstabbing and manipulation were forged as its weapons.

Everyone thinks it was the Peter Principle, but it was actually the "Dilbert Principle" that came after and says companies promote incompetents so as to minimize the amount of damage they can do.  What you say is so true.  I've learned we must worry less about our work and more about having "bling" (shiny hubcaps that spin, gaudy jewelry, etc).  Work?  Eh!

I am part of that choir you are preaching to.....Boy! am I ever!

I would still be working but for the reasons you stated.....and what really scares me is that mentality is what is running our country and the future needs are based on what they are doing to us....

It is a scary world out there and I am not too sure I feel safe any more.
