  • Works in Progress

Well, the only work on which I've made progress this week is the mystery project from last week.

Anybody else guess what it was?

    I'll tell you.

I am knitting for Isaac, at his request, a Gecko scarf.  Not a Geico scarf.  And not the Gecko from Geico, either.  That Gecko has spots.  Mine has stripes.  See?

The pattern and yarn are a kit from Morehouse Merino, although you may be able to get the pattern separately.  I really, really like the yarn.  It's a sport weight merino that feels very Little House on the Prairie--sturdy, sproingy, and super-soft.  Just what Ma would have knitted Pa's socks out of.  And what Mother probably did knit Father's socks out of.  (Almanzo's parents raised Merinos.)

And the pattern is super-easy.  Garter stitch only, with a couple of increases and decreases.  The eyes are a little fiddly, but not too much.  If you've only ever done garter stitch scarves and now you want to try a garter stitch scarf with some style, this one will definitely be your speed.  I'm using size 3.25 mm needles, but I knit very loose--I think you're supposed to use 3.75 or 4mm.

I'm about half done.  Now the question will be whether I can get away with hiding it until Christmas.

There are some other Works In Progress hanging around the house.

    Like this one.

I started it . . . oh, I don't know, at least a year and a half before Theo was born.  I think I was hoping to have it for last summer.  And then after that, for this past summer.  Once it was clear that I would be a watermelon before I could possibly finish it, I stopped working on it.

It's a sleeveless top in KnitPicks Shine, color River.  I got the pattern from them, too, but they don't appear to sell it any more.  Too bad--it'll be really cute, I think.

The stitch--kind of a lacey rib knit--has some stretch to it, so I might be able to wear it even before I get back to fighting weight.  It's about eighty percent finished, I think--I've finished the back, and I'm at the point where I start the armholes on the front.  If I work really fast, I can finish it just in time to . . . . fold it nicely and put it away until May.

This one has been hanging around since the year we moved to Paris.

It's pretty, isn't it?  Or, wouldn't it be, if I actually finished it?

The yarn is just yummy--cotton chenille from Rowan (back when that meant something).  It's hard to knit with, though, because you're supposed to knit it very, very tightly to keep it in shape.

I do not normally knit very, very tightly.  My hands hurt when I knit on this thing.

Plus, I don't think it's going to end up just a hair too short for my tastes.  I like my sweaters to hit mid-hip-length, and I'm kind of long-torsoed.  This looks like it's going to be waist length.  Meh.

But I'm trying to keep at it.  It was very expensive yarn.  Plus, I've gotten a good chunk of it done.  I think this is the front and I've already knitted the back, although I can't seem to find it at the moment.

The pattern is also from Rowan--from a pattern collection they put out just for this yarn.  Both the yarn and the book are no longer available, I think.

Being about six years old and all.
