The song of the Republican Party is changing and it is becoming a bit more Cher than Alabama. Mere echoes of this change can be heard here in Indiana, but they are getting louder.

Homosexuals are becoming a clearly defined and powerful social force. The best evidence of this can be found in marketing trends. Everything from toothpaste to legal services is being evaluated for their read to the “gay demo”. Television programming such as Will & Grace, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and Boy Meets Boy shows the increasing national acceptance and inclusion. These are important leading indicators for the political spectrum as well.

As social acceptance of homosexuality continues to increase, the gay community is fast becoming major political bloc. Depending upon who’s statistics to which you pay attention, 10% of the population is gay. In such an evenly divided national political scene such as we have today, 10% of the vote is a huge difference.

Now, if you were to listen to mainstream media, one is lead to believe that the gay community is unified under the Democratic Party. While the majority of the GLBT community traditionally is liberal/democratic, there is an emerging group of openly gay Republicans. Organizations such as Log Cabin Republicans and Republican Unity Coalition are collecting the support of substantial donors and politicians such as Former President Ford. The political sphere of the gay community is changing and becoming more conservative.

An example of the changing tide can be found in the exit polling from the last presidential election. According to the data, 25 percent of openly gay voters chose President Bush in 2000.

The explanation for this growing conservatism is two-fold. First, the Republican Party is moving to a more inclusive platform with openly gay national candidates and staff. This is creating an environment where concerns on gay rights are not only accepted but are solicited.

Second, the Republican Party represents the best option for the long-term preservation of individual rights and a strong nation. Gay Republicans seek only equal opportunity and the equal protection afforded to all natural citizens. In protecting and upholding the constitution, Republicans seek to maintain a healthy limit on the role of the federal government in the individual and private lives of its citizens.

The price for a Democratic Party-promised protected status is to great and mainly illusory. Senators Kennedy (D-Ma.) and Clinton (D-Ny.) are both opposed to gay marriage. The social “reforms” they do support, however, have such far reaching economic impacts that they threaten to destroy our nation. In so doing, they compartmentalize various groups removing any hope for unity. Social diversity cannot exist without unity. Without our self-concept of being Americans, a nation of individuals, we become nothing more that intellectually-retarded herds who happen to be grazing in the same geographical vicinity. Beware letting a government regulate every aspect of your life. What happens when they change their stance on your sexuality or just do not live up to their promises, like Kennedy & Company?

Conservative policy represents the best and only long-term insurance for individual freedoms and thereby the freedom to be who you are.
