MTC #5
The MTC #5 topic is:
What are your favorite holiday traditions and why?
Hm. Had to think about this one. These will be in no particular order. One of my favorite traditions is cooking and baking. Especially if it's stuff that can be done ahead of time and frozen. Yep, frozen. So far, have cooked both pierogi and uszka (Polish tortellini) and they are set for Christmas Eve. Have also baked (and baked, and baked, and still have some baking left to do) a walnut torte which is set in freezer to be thawed out later - still have frosting to do for that, but that will wait until this coming week when I finish up doing baking. Along with that were done some gingerbread cookies and a couple other varieties. I think the reason I like the cooking and baking is not only the food itself, but the lovely smells that tend to fill up the house.
The next couple are sort of related - in the reason why I like them.
First one being cards. I really like receiving cards. Sending them too, but receiving cards, well.....on the other hand, it may also have something to do with the fact that I collect them. Post cards, holiday cards, regular cards, I have a whole big stack of them. How big? I have one 5 inch binder filled with greeting cards, two 2.5 inch binders filled with various post cards, and still have some lying loosely around until I manage to locate the protective sheets, and put the cards in the sheets and put them in a binder.
The other tradition is gifts. While I like getting gifts, with this I think I actually like finding the perfect little something for either family members or friends. And this, I do year round - the finding I mean. I'll be browsing, looking at something and all of a sudden go "Perfect for so and so", buy it, then store it until either the holidays (or a birthday) come around and be able to give said gift then.
I think all around favorite tradition though is simply being able to share the holidays with family and friends. More family than friends, but even so, find the time to say a few words here and there.

I agree, all holidays are for family.
Sounds like you've got the gift thing all worked out! I can never figure out what to get Dad..
