fun with a calculator

The last half hour or so at work today was quite slow, and there was something I'd been meaning to calculate, so when I grabbed the calculator we keep at the front desk, I predictably ended up playing around with it for a bit and doing some random math to see if any patterns emerged. Among other things, I learned:

- As of today, I have been at my job for 500 calendar days! If I had known before today I might have brought cookies to work or something. I was so surprised to see that on the day I added that up it happened to be a nice even number, so I just had to call up a co-worker and tell him about it, since he's usually pretty bored the last half-hour of the workday. We also figured out that he's been working at the law library over 1,200 days, or about 2.6 times as long as I have.

- I have been single for 94 days. The day my last (short-lived) relationship began I had been single for 1,413 days. Altogether, I have been single for roughly 91.3% of my lifetime.

- I found some semi-interesting things when adding up the digits in dates (example: for October 3, 2006, you would write it as 10/03/06 and add 1 + 0 + 0 + 3 + 0 + 6). If you add up the digits in the dates of both breakups I've had, they both add up to 17. My parents' wedding date adds up to 19, and my sister's wedding date adds up to 20. The biggest number those digits could possibly add up to is 38, which would be what you'd get adding the digits of 09/29/99 (9 + 2 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 38). I don't think there's any significance to any of that, but I have no doubt that books have been written about such things.

- I've lived in 3 different zip codes during my life. The five individual digits in those zip codes add up to 25, 23, and 19, respectably. If you add the three zip codes together (as if they were all just numbers in the ten thousands) and divide them by 3 (I guess that would be my zip code average), you end up with 76024, which is actually an unused zip code. And the digits of it (7 + 6 + 0 + 2 + 4) add up to 19, same as my present zip code.

- I'm planning on seeing the Dave Matthews Band when they play their show in Dallas on August 16th. They were my favorite band my last year or so of high school and probably my first couple years of college. They have a very loyal following and most of their big fans have been to multiple shows, and some can boast of attending several dozen or more. But I've always found a way to miss them somehow whenever they played near me. I saw them play live for my first and only time the summer after I graduated from high school. When I see them again, it will have been 2,589 days since I last attended a DMB gig.

- I'm also planning on seeing Coldplay's Dallas concert on November 19th. This likewise will be my second time to see that band live. I saw their first Dallas show on their Twisted Logic Tour, which ran from 2005 to 2006. When I (hopefully) see them again, it will have been 1,153 days since I saw them live for the first time.

- Ok, one more. The day I flew on a plane for the first time, I was 8,649 days old. As of today, the last time I flew on a plane was 773 days ago.

I'm going on vacation in 4 days! It'll be the first vacation I've taken since I got my job. I've taken a handful of days off here and there, for various reasons, but never more than one day at a time. So it will be a wonderful break to be away for a whole week. Hope all you people who actually go to work next week have a good one
