| | BIOLOGY IN DAILY LIFE
If Mills and Boon ever decided to change their focus from romance to science:
She turned around and there he was! Their chance meetings were always like that - unpredictable, unreliable yet they never failed breathe life into her spirit. The endocrine gland in her adrenal medulla, activated by impulses from the autonomic nervous system in response to the utter unexpectancy of seeing him again, started to produce adrenaline. She could feel her increasing heart rate, lub dub lub dub as the atrioventricular valves and semilunar valves closed one after the other to prevent blood from flowing back into the atrium and ventricles respectively. She started to hyperventilate as her respiratory rate increased and bronchioles relaxed. The low carbon dioxide level caused her body to assume that the oxygen level was high, resulting in her brain's blood vessels constricting. Lightheaded, she could only smile when he, noticing her flushed cheeks due to vasodilation, asked if she was okay. The photoreceptors in the retina of her eyes started an electical signal which travelled along the sensory neurone in the optic nerve and, transported by chemical means across a synapse, entered her brain and was passed on to the relay neurone. Across a synapse it went and the signal was then passed to the receptor neurone and the motor neurone carried the signal to stimulate the radial muscles of the iris to contract. Her pupils dilated so she'd notice changes around her quickly, which was quite ironic that she tripped over a stone while they were making their way indoors. However, she did not feel any pain, not becuz her decreased sensory threshold prevented her from feeling much of it but he caught her in the nick of time, and then there was just the two of them. She felt strangely energetic, like she could run a marathon due to the adrenaline stimulating conversion of liver glycogen to glucose so that the normal level of 70-90mg of glucose per 100cc of blood was increased. And that's love for you. |
