  • Instead Of Show

    Currently Listening
    Spring and Summer
    By Jon Foreman
    I Hate All Your Show
    see related

I hate all your show and pretense
    The hypocrisy of your praise
    The hypocrisy of your festivals
    I hate all your show
    Away with your noisy worship
    Away with your noisy hymns
I stomp on my ears when you’re singing ‘em
    I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
    Instead of a show

Your eyes are closed when you’re praying
You sing right along with the band
You shine up your shoes for services
    There’s blood on your hands
You turned your back on the homeless
And the ones that don’t fit in your plan
    Quit playing religion games
    There’s blood on your hands

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
    Instead of a show
    I hate all your show

    Let’s argue this out
If your sins are blood red
    Let’s argue this out
You’ll be one of the clouds
    Let’s argue this out
    Quit fooling around
Give love to the ones who can’t love at all
Give hope to the ones who got no hope at all
Stand up for the ones who can’t stand at all, all
    I hate all your show
    I hate all your show
    I hate all your show
    I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
    Instead of a show
    I hate all your show

  • His lyrics are so amazing and so powerful........he is an awesome vessel for God

  • man, those are some true words you posted there. God doesnt want to hear our crap.  He doesnt want us to make ourselves seem like we love Him and are worshipping Him just so that other people think we are in right standing.  He wants us to be real.  He wants our praises to be real.  He wants our worship to be real.  Real worship.  Man.

  • "God doesnt want to hear our crap" After posting that and rereading I thought it could come across wrong.  God does want to hear our crap.  What I was meaning by such was fake crap singing and "worshipping" and praising. I know you prob knew what I meant but yeah, thought i should clear that up.

  • p.s. You can come to massena now, I said so.

  • im slightly scared of those lyrics, bc of all of the mis-interpritation that can come about our God. not from christians such as us but from people who dont believe and new believers. it slightly represents God as someone who can hate, as someone who has the ability to hate ppl bc they are fake. i understand where he is coming from and i kinda like the rawness of this song. it can make for good debate but i feel like debate leads to the type of slight disunity that the devil wants. he deveives us and that is his best weapon. i think this song can deceive many ppl about the true nature of the living God who loves. i dont mean that to be an attack on this man or his talent to write songs or on his character, this song just kind of reminds me of protestors of gay rights who hold signs that say "God hates fags". i understand that it is from the bible. ken malmin said in one of his classes when asked "why cant ppl who arent christians understand the bible." his answer was simple, "they dont have the nature of God." when ppl who dont have the nature of God see this, there is lots of room in "their understanding" to assume that God can hate. in this passage God is speaking to a nation who has turned their back on God, rebelled, turned to corruption much like sodom and gomorrah. yet at the same time they bring meaningless offerings. no one would have known that had it not been looked up, non christians will not know that, they will only hear "I HATE all your show." i dont know, its tough.

  • not really, man. first of all the song is straight up scripture. and i'm sure that most people hate fake pretense and hypocrisy just as much as God does. and this song is just expressing it. people can hear "i hate your show" and God is saying the same thing. the people God had the hardest time with weren't the broken and beat, but the pharisees who put on a show.
this song should be taken for what it is: to remind us not to be showy, or put on false pretenses.
Jon Foreman should in not remind us of Fred Phelps (the guy who started that "God hates fags" church").  He is not trying to do that by any means, and the heart of this song is the heart of Scripture - true praise and worship that goes beyond words. the only thing that is tough about this song is that it calls us out on our own show.
Personally, i felt convicted by this song. it brings true righteous living back into perspective. and if we have a hard time with this song it could do us well to remember that it is God who is saying this to his people. it's constructive criticism from the mouth of God. and maybe thats tough to swallow cause it goes against the very nature of our flesh.

  • Israel is a shadow/type of the "true Israel of God"/the Church. The context of God speaking to Israel, is the same context for the Church. We must never find ourselves thinking we are beyond reproach. Correction is often times the very outworking of God's loving nature. And at times, the Church will need to be steered back in the right direction. It is God's committment to love and protect and guide the Church to reach her blameless-beauty as the Bride of Christ. We should be more than willing to be just as committed.

  • this is travis again. i wasnt saying it isnt good for christians. what i was saying is that this song can be taken very wrong by non believers, leading them to believe that god is a hateful god when all he was doing was trying to round up the ones he loves to do right and turn away from wrong things. i know that it is scripture but to a non believer who doesnt read it, they can take this song way out of wack. im saying that as christians we have a different understanding of what this means. im not affraid of this song for the the sake of christians. im scared of this song for the sake of non believers that already believe they have a reason to hate god and the church. thats all. im not saying jon foreman is anything like that other man, what i meant by that was that it can be mistaken by extremists to be the same. thats all
