  • Weekend blogging

All week, I've been sending items I want to blog about from my work email to home so I can have them at the ready, and my little one isn't in bed yet, so I won't get to any of that yet, and this may be a really short post.

    Quick story regarding little one.

I had a minor operation last year to repair an umbilical hernia, and couldn't lift the child for about 4 weeks afterward. Preparations for the surgery included explaining this to my nearly 3-year-old who still gets carried quite a bit -- "Mommy has a boo (our word for boo-boo) on her tummy, and won't be able to pick you up." A few reminders and little one was pretty well on board. But wanted to see the boo, you know, for proof.
The other day (it's been about 5 months now since the surgery), my kidlet says, "Mommy, I want to see your boo." I lift up my shirt and show it -- a little Y shaped scar right under my belly button. "No, your other one." I show the scar from before little one was here -- an appendectomy that wasn't laparoscopic, leaving me with a 4-inch horozontal shiny scar tucked into an indent on the right side of my squishy belly. Seeing it, little one was satisfied.

Right now, when my child is playing with plastic animals, the largest one is the mommy, the medium sized one is daddy, and the littlest one is the baby. I don't mind. I am not looking forward to the day when my little one becomes aware of size as being connected with a value, the knowledge that for many, mommy's form of bigness isn't regarded with love. Right now, I know that I see love in my child's gaze without the filter of size-related judgement. I don't expect this to last forever -- little one is bright and sensitive -- but maybe will inherit daddy's disregard for others' opinions on this and many other things.

There's so much I want to write about right now, but unfortunately, that will have to wait.
