some days i don't like our school paper. okay. not true. some days i don't like what the paper prints. eh....well.... unfortunately, there are days when the paper prints quotes from stupid people. correction: it's not the paper's fault. for starters, there was a letter to the editor. commenting on the in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, Ms Craft appeals to our emotional side by emphasizing the economic stress of these immigrants. she is quoted: "So-called illegal aliens are economic refugees. They come here to escape extreme poverty. Let's stop demonizing desperate people in desperate situations." Okay, sure. America is often blamed for being full of themselves and dominating the world economically. However, it is absolutely impossible to save EVERY impoverished person from EVERY country DESPITE criminal behavior (i.e. entering the country illegally). I just wish she understand the impossibility in carrying out her high ideals. Anonymous kvetch puts a more realistic spin on the whole situation (in my opinion): "Notice to all out-of-state students: Claim to be an 'undocumented' immigrant and save thousands on tuition!" Turning to the front page, we have an article on STD testing. A highly entertaining article Actually. So it seems there has been a new discovery according to Fred Wyand of the American Social Health Association. There is no longer a mysterious origin for the onset of STDs, in fact "STDs are increasingly becoming a fact of being sexually active." Who would've guessed?! I mean, it's not like other illnesses, where the cause is due to poor hygeine, aweful cafeteria food or inherited genes. No! There is actually a Specific Way to stop the contraction of STDs: DON'T HAVE SEX. Oh My Gosh. Someone should name a building after this guy: Wyand Hall! Awesome. Well, unfortunately, the article was not solely focused on the novel idea that STDs come from sex, but instead about the controversial topic of increasing student fees to incompass free STD testing. Now, I don't know about you, but, seeing how I know the way to avoid contracting this disease... ...AND the theory is now well-known since a manager for the ASHA has stated it in a widely-read campus paper...... .....I'm thinking that I probably would not like to pay more money to a university for a service I never intend to use.... ....AND which is not that expensive in the first place.
$35-55 for a test is Not a big deal (at least compared to your overall tuition). Plus, you should have a general idea of whether or not you might need to be tested. (I mean, most people are fairly aware of how much sex they've had.) It's not like I'm against student health fees as a universal idea. I understand that most illnesses for which students call Student Health are for reasons totally out of their control: migranes pneumonia strep throat fractures, etc. Most of these reasons are unpredictable and can be difficult to avoid (especially when 30 people share a bathroom). However, it does not make sense to make students (especially those who know how to avoid STDs) to be forced to pay for other irresponsible adults. I don't know about the rest of the UNC student body, but I certainly don't want to pay for someone else's poor decision to have a careless sex life. |
